Colostrum to Strengthen the Immune System and Fight Infections

Colostrum to Strengthen the Immune System and Fight Infections

Colostrum for Improved ImmunityBefore the development of antibiotics, colostrum was the main source of immunoglobulins used to fight infections.  And now that anti-biotic resistant strains of bacteria are developing, interest is returning to natural alternatives to antibiotics, like colostrum.Colostrum, or sometimes called "First Milk" or "Beestings", is the initial milk produced by the mammary glands.  It is produced in the last stages of pregnancy and the first few days following birth, usually thicker and more yellow than the milk that follows.White blood cells (leukocytes) are prominent in colostrum.  These are also important in protecting the body from bacteria, viruses and foreign matter, especially in infants.  Babies that are born prematurely have been shown to do much better with colostrum than formula, as the natural proteins, minerals, nutrients and other components are much easier to digest, and more completely so, than the laboratory synthetic components in formulas.  And, of course, there are dozens and dozens of natural ingredients that cannot be duplicated in the laboratory. It is also notable that the formation of healthy colonies of "good" bacteria in the intestines is aided by consuming colostrum.

Colostrum as a Supplement

Colostrum is a good "traveling" supplement as it doesn't need to be refrigerated. It is high in the protein antibodies (immunoglobulins) specific to many human disease-causing organisms (pathogens) including E.Coli, salmonella and staphylococcus.  In this way, it further assists proper immune function.  Colostrum is very rich in proteins and vitamin A, and contains growth factors, antimicrobial factors and antibodies, providing even more passive immunity.Take 1-2 capsules, twice a day, depending on weight, and 1-2 hours away from food, as well as 2-3 hours away from antibiotics.Click here to go to the Eve's Herbs store for Colostrum.Doc Eve

Herbal Remedies for Dog Joint Pain and Overall Health

Herbal Remedies for Dog Joint Pain and Overall Health

Dog owners have been enthusiastically reporting back to us on the healing and recovery from dog joint pain, hip dysplasia, subdermal tumors and a loss of energy and vitality.  Dog joint pain, and the draining of zest and spirit that will accompany it, is a heartbreaking thing to watch.  But here is one dog's story of recovery...

Testimonial from "Sid" the movie actor dog

Sid, on the "Breathless" movie set, and his recovery from dog joint painIn one case, “Sid”, the movie actor dog, became suddenly arthritic after his 10th birthday. Over the next 4 years, he got progressively worse, having to be carried up stairs, lifted into the car, developing numerous tumors.  Eventually he was not even able to walk a few yards before collapsing. As fate would have it, a frequent user of the Eve’s Herbs formulas just happened to be passing by.  This person handed Sid’s owner a piece of paper with “www.EvesHerbs.com” written on it, and suggested she try some herbs for her ailing dog.  Skeptical but hopeful, she gave the two recommended formulas a try and Sid responded within days.  He began running and playing again and his tumors even shrunk.Eighteen months later, Sid’s owner reported, “Sid just had his 16th birthday and he’s still hiking around the foothills chasing squirrels.  Who knows if there’s a day or a year left in him, but having the last year and a half to appreciate every moment and see him enjoying life… that’s indescribable.”Sid can be seen playing “Earl the dog” in the 2012 version of the movie “Breathless” starring Gina Gershon, Val Kilmer, Kelli Giddish and Ray Liotta. For an article written by Sid’s owner for Mountain Weekly News about his recovery, check out: mtnweekly.com/old-dog-new-hope-32642

Dehydration Dangers in the Heat of Summer

Dehydration Dangers in the Heat of Summer

Dehydration in Hot Weather

With the heat seeming to reach higher averages each year, the possibility of dehydration and the resulting symptoms is a growing concern, especially in summer time.

Human body weight approaches 75% water which is crucial to the proper functioning of all body systems.  Dehydration can affect blood pressure causing organs and tissues to not receive the proper amounts of oxygen and nutrients required.

Dehydration occurs when your body is losing more water than it is taking in.  This is easy to do in the summer heat when you're busy and not noticing how long it has been since you last drank something.  Exercise and excessive sweating can surely accelerate the process, as can illness with fever, diarrhea and vomiting.

We're all at risk, but the elderly, young children and those with chronic illnesses are especially susceptible and should be monitored for fluid intake - keep an eye on your pets, too.  Mild to moderate dehydration can usually be dealt with by simply drinking more water, while severe dehydration will require immediate emergency care.

Symptoms of Dehydration

Symptoms of mild to moderate dehydration include:

  • Thirst (duh!) with accompanying dry or sticky mouth.
  • Feeling tired and sleepy - a decrease in the amount of activity in children.
  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded.
  • Dark yellow urine and/or not urinating as usual - over 3 hours for infants, 8 hours in children and teens.
  • Few or no tears when crying.
  • Headaches, often accompanied by constipation.
  • Dry skin.

What To Do To Avoid Dehydration

Start drinking extra water at the first sign of any of the above symptoms of dehydration, but if any of these symptoms become severe, and especially if they are accompanied by rapid heartbeat and/or breathing, delirium or unconsciousness, call for emergency treatment at once.

If you are more the type that likes to think preventively, drinking several glasses of water a day is always a good idea, and you can use the taking of your daily herbs as a reminder to drink a little extra.  Eating foods with a high water content is another way of increasing your daily fluid intake.  Here's a list to start you off:

High Water Content Foods

  • Watermelon:            92%
  • Grapefruit:                90%
  • Coconut Water:       95%
  • Avocado:                   81%
  • Cucumber:                96%
  • Cantaloupe:              89%
  • Strawberries:           92%
  • Broccoli:                    90%

Have a happy and healthy summer!Doc Eve

Cancer Proofing Our Bodies - Part II

Cancer Proofing Our Bodies - Part II

Cancer Proofing Our Bodies - Eve 42 Years Cancer ProofIn "Cancer Proofing Our Bodies - Part I", we discussed WHY cancer proofing our bodies is a good idea.  Now we will discuss HOW to improve our odds of avoiding this all-too-common illness.  We will do this by strengthening our immune systems and bodies overall, whether you are thinking preventively or looking to add a natural approach to your current therapy. Many factors, which are difficult or impossible to change, can affect the likelihood of  becoming ill from any specific disease.  These might include a family history of certain illnesses passed down through generations, or levels of environmental pollution where you live.  But there is much that we can do to stay strong and healthy while cancer proofing our bodies.

Where to Begin

We know that cancer can be caused by, and/or thrive on, an overload of toxicity in our bodies.  We take on these toxins through various sources which then lower our immune functions.  These sources include:

  • foods that are full of artificial sweeteners and colors, and loads of other chemicals never meant for humans to eat.
  • drugs
  • environmental pollutants
  • negativity
  • chronic anger

It makes sense then to cut back on those toxins or toxic states which we can control. There is woefully little we can do about our environmental pollutants, except be aware and contribute on an individual basis.  However, we can review how we fuel our bodies with good foods and supplementing with the herbs. All these aspects of eliminating toxicity in our bodies are written in easy-to-follow steps in my streamlined little book called, Feeling Very Much Better, which I originally wrote as a large doctoral essay about 33 years ago.  The Liver Chapter (6), having been written with cancer prevention in mind, is now being born out by nutritional suggestions from the American Cancer Society and other such lofty establishments.

The following Herbal Formulas can be used in various combinations, as needed, to assist us in cancer proofing our bodies:

  • AHCC - a formula with anti-cancer mushrooms primarily researched in Japan.
  • Carnivora from Germany, also known as Venus Fly Trap, promotes a healthy immune system, and selectively responds to abnormal cells only.
  • Enhance - a formula primarily from China is a powerful immune system regulator and liver cleanser.
  • Pau D'Arco - also known as Incan Lapacho or Tajeebo, has beneficial effects for cancer patients, including relief from chemotherapy symptoms.
  • Blend F  or 50/50 for adrenal support and to begin restoring a calm energy.
  • Nu-Liv to clear the liver, especially following chemotherapy.
  • Herbal Multi and MNF to help relieve and heal nerve damage, plus supplementing vitamins and minerals.
  • Sugar Free to support a compromised pancreas.

More personal combinations can and should initially be put together, of course.  This can be accomplished by putting together a package on your own, or we can assist you (see below).  These herbal formulas have no side effects except to help us feel better overall and to find that our outlook on life will improve.  This, in turn, is likely to increase our immune function. All of the above formulas and my book, Feeling Very Much Better, can be found on our store, through our newly designed website, www.EvesHerbs.com.Benjamin Franklin's famous axiom, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure", has never been more true, especially in regards to our health and the increasing challenges we face in environmental pollution and toxicities in our food supply.Cancer proofing our bodies is often a team effort.  If we can be of any further assistance in your quest, please feel free to contact us.Best of health to you always,Doc Eve

Cancer Proofing Our Bodies - Part I

Cancer Proofing Our Bodies - Part IWe are burglar proofing our cars and earthquake proofing our homes, so why aren't we cancer proofing our bodies, or at least improving our chances of beating the odds (nearly 1 male in 2, and over 1 female in 3*).  Just as burglar alarms and home retrofitting are not 100% protection, they reduce our odds of loss or damage.  Cancer proofing our bodies is an excellent investment in our futures.I’m seeing more and more people who are on their second or third round with cancer, after the protocol treatments of chemotherapy and radiation, and they are frightened.  There is hope, however, because even though their bodies have been weakened by their prior treatments, the nutritive, restorative and anti-carcinogenic herbs help to rebuild the body and counter the toxicity.Actually, cancer proofing our bodies doesn’t have to be accomplished by eating sawdust-like foods and grim determination.  All it takes is common sense and the responsibility of being as good to our bodies as we are to our cars and homes.  The usual resistance and excuses of, “But it’s just no fun…", and, "If it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen…", or, "Well, everything causes cancer these days so what’s the difference…?”, is the same as letting our car run out of gas, then kicking the tires when it won’t go and looking to the Heavens with a dumbfounded plea of, "WHY ME!?".Cancer Proofing Our Bodies - Eve 42 Years Cancer ProofI see it as a challenge of our times, and quite frankly, from someone who has been free and clear of uterine and cervical cancer for 42 years now, I’m not missing ANYTHING I want, within reason, as those who have caught me indulging in my occasional Haagen Dazs Chocolate Chocolate Chip ice cream will gleefully tell you.  Besides, respect for our bodies will have to be learned sooner or later, and believe me, sooner is MUCH MORE FUN.With the grace of God, people I work with who have also made these common sense changes and use the herbs for long term support have been as blessed with prevention as I have.  My greatest wish is to still be able to say that in my retiring newsletter.  Oh dear, all is vanity after all…of course, this may never be documented in a true double blind study, because a doctor does not get credit for the disease he/she has helped to prevent, because you cannot see what did not happen.  Needless to say, when the Great Spirit in the Sky decides our time is up, then it’s up, however, for the rest of us there is free will... so let’s get to it.Check our blog next week for recommendations on food and herbal formulas for optimizing our health in "Cancer Proofing Our Bodies - Part II".Doc Eve*According to the American Cancer Society and the US National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Database, based on incidence and mortality data for the United States from 2007 through 2009, the most current years for which data are available:Males have a 44.81% chance (nearly 1 in 2) of developing cancer, and a 23.08% chance (nearly 1 in 4) of dying from cancer (overall, all types of cancers).Females have a 38.17% chance (over 1 in3) of developing cancer, and a 19.39% chance (nearly 1 in 5) of dying form cancer (overall, all types of cancers).Doc Eve

Prostate Enlargement, Inflammation and Infection Remedies

Prostate enlargement, inflammation and/or infection is a large and growing problem for men that can be relieved or avoided with some changes in diet and a few nutritive and soothing herbal natural remedies. While an inflamed prostate leading to prostatitis may be caused by the toxic side effects of long term drug use, it is much more commonly due to over-processed, low-in-nourishment foods that are high in acids, salts, fats, chemicals and sugar - i.e., what has become the typical American diet.  Tomato products, which contain high amounts of lycopene, may seem alright, and often are touted as a prostate cancer preventative,  but are actually very irritating to the prostate - especially cooked tomato products like spaghetti sauce.  There are plenty of other fruits and vegetables that are high in lycopene that do not irritate the prostate and are, in fact, quite soothing instead.Besides the above, it would also be advisable to avoid coffee, black tea, red meats, white flour, alcohol and sodas, especially the "diet" ones.  Drinking plenty of water each day, 6-8 glasses depending on your size, in between meals, not with meals, would also be recommended.

A Natural, Herbal Solution to Prostate Problems

The Eve's Herbs "Prostate Inflammation, Infection & Enlargement Therapy Pack" contains two herbal formulas packed with herbs that provide mega-nutrition for the prostate, as well as those with anti-inflammatory properties to promote the calming, soothing, healing and reduction of inflammation and enlargement of the prostate.Saw Palmetto Berries, best known for supporting the reduction of an enlarged prostate, are in both formulas giving you a double dose.  Other positive side effects can include the promotion of an increased libido, an improved flow when urinating, as well as less trips to the bathroom during the night. The included instructions and Dr. Eve's book will provide greater detail on what to eat and what not to eat, plus some yummy recipes. The Therapy Pack, which also contains a homeopathic remedy, is designed to help you attain short-term symptomatic relief as well as promoting a strong and healthy prostate in the long term that can help avoid the ever-increasing prostatectomy procedure that is becoming all to common and can potentially lead to incontinence and a ruined sex life.Click here to check out the Prostate Inflammation, Infection & Enlargement Therapy PackProstate Therapy PackDoc Eve

Black Cohosh Root Benefits for Women and Men

Black Cohosh RootBlack Cohosh Root has a history of use for both women and men in this country that dates back to Native American tribes and European colonists.Benefits for Women:Over a century ago, eclectic physician Harvey Wickes Felter wrote about Black Cohosh and its effects on gynecological disorders, muscle spasms and frayed nerves.  Much has been written since then about its many benefits for women in the relief of the symptoms of menopause (hot flashes, mood swings, sleep disturbances and irritability) and menstrual cramps.  Having been extensively used for at least half a century in Europe, black cohosh root is approved in Germany for premenstrual and menstrual pain, as well as menopausal symptoms. This combination of nervine, phytoestrogen and  anti-spasmodic properties makes black cohosh root an effective regulator of uterine contractions while in labor and overall support to childbirth.Benefits for Men:For men, a more recent review of research by the University of Maryland Medical Center found that studies have shown that black cohosh can reduce the inflammation seen in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.  Black cohosh extract was also found to inhibit the proliferation of human prostate cancer cells in a study published in Planta Medica (February 2007).  Men can also take advantage of the general anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of black cohosh as well.  While in high doses it may disrupt the male hormone imbalance, taken wisely, it can be of great benefit. Our Eve's Herbs formula, Blend E:V, has black cohosh root as its main ingredient, and additionally contains saw palmetto berries which, while mainly known for its effectiveness in cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) for men, also acts as a nerve sedative, expectorant and nutritive tonic. The Blend E:V, with its combination of Black Cohosh and five other herbal ingredients, has been found - in over 35 years of clinical practice - to promote fertility and aid in becoming pregnant. To read more about, or purchase the Blend E:V formula, click here.Best of health,Doc Eve
