Early Spring Allergies and Colds + Lyme Disease
Dear Patients and Friends,It seems spring is a bit pushy this year and is presenting in the middle of winter - at least on the west coast. It’s always a good idea to have your Aller-Total, Bactotox and Herba Pneu ready to neutralize the garden variety allergies that turn into colds and other spring nuisances. The Aller-Total works instantly to cut short the sneezes, itches, runny nose, etc., while the trusty Bactotox and Herba Pneu formulas both prevent or diminish the attack on any of the mucous membranes.I'm working with more mouth infections lately, and a long-time patient wrote, "I got a weird infection in my tooth - the right side. This happened once before on the left side. Both teeth need new caps. It was so painful that it knocked me out for a day. Then I could hardly eat. I began taking the Bactotox the next day and it slowly went away. Now, I can bite down on that side and it doesn't hurt. Yeah!”Any mouth infections should, of course, be monitored by our dentist, who is often surprised that the herbs have resolved the problem. Maximum doses of (especially) the Bactotox need to be used for at least 4 days, so make sure you have enough.LYME DISEASE - NO LONGER JUST A NORTHEAST PROBLEMLYME DISEASE cases, which have spread across the country to the west coast, can often also be helped with the herbs. A few weeks ago, I started a patient on the AR+ and O/N formulas. She had been struggling with Lyme Disease for about a year, and with those two formulas, the pain is now considerably less overall. The edema, which was a real bugbear, especially in the arms and legs, prevented her from sitting for any length of time. This was a real problem at work, but now she says she can sit for hours. As you know, the AR+ formula is a wonderful anti-inflammatory, especially for arthritis, bursitis and the other “itises." The O/N helps kidneys, bladder and allergies, but is primarily used as a diuretic when kidneys are not up for their job of relieving bloating and swelling. As Lyme disease is a bacterial infection, we included the anti-bacterial Bactotox, plus the BWC and PS:HW formulas, to deal with parasitic-related digestive issues.Best of Health to You as Always,Doc EveFrom So. Apple Cider Vinegar Part 2 - A Fave Salad Recipe
Dear Patients and Friends,Well, CHEERS and a fine 2016 to us all. Having said that, I don't know about you, but I sure dove for the Joy Formula halfway through the holidays. The New Year's cleansing of the body is great, of course, but the emotional aspect maybe needs even more help. The Joy Formula helps to smooth that roller coaster and provides some gentle energy.Apple Cider Vinegar in My New Favorite Salad and Detoxing FoodI've been taking apple cider vinegar (ACV) twice a day lately, and, as it is an essential part of this recipe, I figured this would be a delicious way to get it in me rather than just swigging it down with water.I'd forgotten about the red cabbage, just falling into a rut with the white (or green), which is great too, of course. Joey picked up a head of the red, while he was visiting us for the holidays, and promptly left it. I remembered the red cabbage salad recipe we used to eat at King’s Road Cafe in L.A., and decided to try it. So the following is based on that, but I’ve tweaked it a bit:
RED CABBAGE SALAD à la Eve
1 medium red cabbage1/2 bunch of parsley (chopped)1/2 medium red onion (chopped)Sea salt to tasteFresh ground black pepper to taste1/4 cup olive oil1/2 cup apple cider vinegarDirections: Shred the cabbage and red onion using the “slicer” blade with your food processor and pop them into a large pretty serving bowl. Season with salt and fresh ground pepper, and add in the chopped parsley. Drizzle the olive oil and apple cider vinegar over the lot. Gently mix together and serve, or cover and refrigerate. Stays crispy for a good 3 days. Add to anything. You might want to take another look at the Detox Chapter in "Feeling Very Much Better" as well, and the Detox Therapy Pack is in our Web Store.
Apple Cider Vinegar's Other Health Benefits
I know I've talked about apple cider vinegar before, but this is a great time for a gentle reminder to use this wonderful food to help our bodies chew up all the extra fat so the arteries can stay happy too. Complement the apple cider vinegar with the GB (fat digestion) and Eve's Cardio (healthy heart blood flow) formulas for a great combination to enhance heart health and circulation.Apple cider vinegar is an age old folk remedy and the pectin contained in it is known to soothe intestinal aches, spasms and pain. It is also known as an anti-bacterial and an anti-fungal. The best mixture should include between 2 teaspoons and 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with some water, apple or other juice. An effective way to help eliminate a sore throat is to gargle with apple cider vinegar. The pain-causing bacteria in the throat do not like the acid content, which means they will die off in a hurry when you gargle with it. Use about two ounces of apple cider vinegar mixed with two ounces of warm water and gargle once per hour for throat pain relief. There has been quite a bit of research and studies on how to reduce high cholesterol. Some of these studies have shown apple cider vinegar to be beneficial for cholesterol levels*. In as little as one tablespoon, it is possible to lower cholesterol levels when taken daily. The acetic acid contained in the vinegar is what is believed to help normalize cholesterol in the body.I do Thank the Following People for referring others to us for our herbs and info:Lisa Baker, Gina Figueroa, Sharon Garrett, Kory Heiken, Jennifer Hill, Jennifer Krasinsky, Gabriela McCallister, Mary McDonald, Harvey Rosenfield, Natalie Shirinian, Sabrina Teiger and Veronica Valles for referring their dear ones.* Functional Properties of Vinegar - https://oakbarrelsltd.com/files/Vinegar%20-%20Journal%20of%20Food%20Science%202014.pdfBest of Health to You as Always,Doc EveFrom So. Apple Cider Vinegar to the Rescue
Viruses and bacteria are also getting into holiday mode and being most generous with their gifts again, sweetly distributed by lots of our favorite ankle biters with sticky fingers fresh from rubbing runny noses. It once again reminds me of the "Mom and Pop" remedy of apple cider vinegar. It is such a tried and true remedy, especially combined with the herbs below, to prevent these airborne microbial armies from "sticking to us".Apple cider vinegar also helps with weight by cutting the fat, and, when drunk or gargled in some warm water, is great for sore throat, laryngitis, etc.

Ear Infection - Pain and Vertigo
Ear infection with pain and/or vertigo has had a number of patients calling me recently, so I thought I’d share my own little run in with it.I made an appointment with a GP after waking up in the night with an ear pain that was giving me what-for in no uncertain terms. I am quite familiar with it since bursting an eardrum in a water skiing fall some decades ago. It tends to pop when I fly anywhere and I like to have it checked for complications, just in case.
Ear Infection Solutions Without Drugs
Of course, a same day appointment was not available, so I booked it for the next. In the meantime, I remembered the patient who called in the previous week with the same thing, and I followed my own advice:1. The O/N formula to shrink the membranes.2. The Bactotox, of course, to re-enforce the immune system in taking out unfriendly bacteria.3. The Herba Pneu to clear any mucous, congestion and swelling out of the area.Vertigo or dizziness can occur from the inflammation with an inner ear infection. I experienced it as a general dizziness and imbalance when standing. Others feel like the room is spinning, especially when sitting up from a lying down position. With ear infections, the immune-supporting Bactotox can work wonders here as well. After a full day of the maximum doses of the above formulas, I woke up fine the next morning. David and I were able to make our yearly visit to the Ashland Japanese Garden with my mother-in-law to spend a little time in awe of nature shamelessly showing off her gorgeous autumn colors again.Thank you very kindly to Gina Figueroa, Kory Heiken and Veronica Valles for referring their dear ones.Best of Health to You as Always,Doc EveFrom So. Chronic Pain and the Foods/Habits That Exacerbate It
Chronic pain from injuries and degenerative diseases like arthritis are a nightmare, often requiring heavy hitting pain meds, at least initially. I've worked with many sufferers of chronic pain who unwittingly continue eating highly acidic foods.Acidic foods aggravate inflammation which, in turn, increases pain. As a rule of thumb, avoid coffee, colas, processed foods, cooked tomato products and sugars/sweeteners and increase fresh vegetables and fruits. See our alkaline kidney diet in chapter 5 (p. 53) of my book, Feeling Very Much Better.I've gone through several bouts of chronic pain more than once myself - I did it many years ago with the gift of a cappuccino machine, which made divine coffee while eroding my menopausal shoulder joints. I've noticed that when the worst is over, if I eat a large salad 1-2 times a day, it cuts the pain by about 25%. Adding fresh lemon or lime water during the day, and taking my morning herbs with black cherry juice, helps some too. Fresh fruit an hour or two after dinner can also cut the pain. The goal is to keep the system as alkaline as possible. And, no... alkaline water by itself is not of much help if the diet is still acidic.Taxing the immune system and liver makes the pain worse, which is where the herbs come into play. They further alkalize the blood and enable us to walk, or begin some other movement, in turn loosening up the stiffness from the chronic pain. Then, of course, there are the hot baths with epsom salts and any meditative exercises like yoga, tai chi, or qigong - or simply sit and meditate with focus on slow breaths. While they may not eliminate chronic pain, improvement can be noticeable enough to begin cutting the pain meds. This, in turn, eases the pain too, as long term use of pain meds actually increases chronic pain by ignoring the causes. At the beginning, we can work together fairly closely by phone or email with herbs, doses, food and exercise suggestions until your own rhythm is established in maintaining a comfort level. When you sum it all up, there is that light at the end of the tunnel that shows us an end to chronic pain is possible.

Dehydration is Often Deceptive in the Cooler Weather
Dehydration can sneak up on us. Until the rains start, and air becomes moist again, be sure to stay hydrated. The cooler weather can fool our bodies into drinking less, and the deception can lead to kidney and bladder problems with associated back pain. We're still dry and draught-stricken here in Oregon, too. I've been doing some rain dances so the clouds will dump their precious stuff, but it seems my inner dancer is snoring.
Dehydration Symptoms
Aside from the obvious feelings of thirst, consider mild dehydration as a possibility if you are experiencing headaches, constipation, dry mouth, eyes or skin, unusual tiredness, decreased urine output, dizziness or lightheadedness. If water doesn't quench the thirst, the juicy seasonal fruits are much better equipped to do so. They fend off dehydration better too, as the water doesn't fly through our bodies as fast. Right now the apples and pears are at their peak, as are my favorite "meaty" black grapes, which will all help to:1) Plump up the skin again2) Re-moisten dry mouth and eyes3) Calm a pounding heart and4) Wake up a fuzzy brainJuices are best avoided as they are too calorie- and sugar-packed, unless they are diluted with at least 1/2 to 3/4 water, especially if we're already on guard against any hypoglycemia or diabetes problems.Favorite herbs this month include all of the immune formulas as we prepare for "flu season" (see "Immune System" on p.21 in the Reference Guide section at the back of your Eve's Herbs catalog for a list). Also, the Patic Fe and Pan DM formulas for pancreas, liver and colon pick-me-uppers.Best of Health to You as Always,Doc EveFrom So.
