Slippery Elm to Protect Stomach Lining When Taking Painkillers

Slippery Elm to Protect Stomach Lining When Taking Painkillers

Slippery Elm BarkDamage to the esophagus and stomach linings caused by NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can be minimized by using our Slippery Elm to help protect these tissues.  NSAIDs include aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, etc), Naproxen (Aleve, Midol, etc), Vioxx, Celebrex and many, many others (click here for a full list).NSAIDs are used, misused and overused daily by millions of people worldwide who attempt to self-treat based on something they heard or read.  This can lead to many of the side effects associated with these drugs, including a burning stomach and/or acid reflux which can lead to an ulcerated stomach and/or esophagus lining, as well as internal bleeding.Other possible side effects include an increased risk of erectile dysfunction (E.D.), cancer of the kidneys and miscarriage to name just a few.

Slippery Elm to Help Protect and Heal the Linings of the Stomach and Esophagus

To reduce the inflammation of the linings of the esphagus and stomach, or to help prevent it before it occurs, Slippery Elm can be used either in capsules or as a tea.If using Eve's Herbs Slippery Elm capsules, simply take 2 capsules at the same time you take the NSAID along with a large glass of water and/or a cup of yogurt or kefir. If you prefer taking it as a tea, open up two Slippery Elm capsules into a cup of hot water and let it sit for several minutes.  This will allow the mucilaginous (slippery) qualities to be drawn out and also allow the tea to cool a bit before drinking.  When it is ready, take it along with the NSAID you are using.Another suggestion would be to take Devil's Claw and either Cramp Bark or MNF (which contains okra, another mucilaginous plant) to possibly reduce the amount of NSAIDs needed.  Devil's Claw is a natural anti-inflammatory we use for arthritis pain, and both Cramp Bark and MNF help reduce muscle spasms.  This combination may then reduce the number of NSAIDs you might need to take.Be cautious in using NSAIDs and give yourself some protection with Slippery Elm, Cramp Bark or MNF.Slippery ElmMNFCramp Bark     Doc Eve

Energy Drops After Lunch and How to Fix Them

Energy Drops After Lunch and How to Fix Them

Energy Drops After LunchThose 2-3 p.m. energy drops can mess up an entire afternoon.  That tired time of the afternoon is often due to a dragging digestion aftermath from what we ate, how fast we ate it and our body's reaction to it.  Here are some possible causes and how to fix them.

Allergic Reaction to Food

One reason for energy drops could be that the food you ate might have contained something to which you are allergic - wheat/gluten, tomatoes, dairy, soy, nuts, shellfish, eggs and fish are the most common ones, but it's certainly not limited to these.
If it's a mild and relatively common food allergy, we have found an often easy fix to be the Patic Fe formula.  Patic Fe is a wonderfully enzymatic digestive, blood sugar regulator and gentle liver reliever.
If this does not fix your energy drops alone, you might try adding the Aller-Total homeopathic formula.  Besides being used for a wide spectrum of allergens, it is effective for multiple food sensitivities, often allowing indulgences of the offending food rather than complete elimination.
If these measures don't do the trick, you might want to try a food elimination diet.  This is beyond the scope of this article, but here is a link to a web page that describes how to do it on your own:    Food Elimination Diet

Overeating or Bad Food Combining

Whenever I've overindulged or did some bad food combining, usually after a sandwich that includes wheat in combination with an animal protein, my energy drops and I start to drag.  My energy is focused on trying to digest this lump in my stomach and there's not much left for my brain.
My nervous system is stuck in parasympathetic digestion mode and my energy drops into sleepiness.  This is when I'll use the Patic Fe with (if I think of it) or after the meal.  I can expect to feel a lot better in about half an hour, and get that Buddha belly down again.
You can review food combining on pages 22 and 23 in my book, Feeling Very Much Better, but the basics are to avoid eating these combinations in the same meal:
  •   Meat and heavy carbohydrates (bread, potatoes, etc.)
  •   Fruits and vegetables
  •   Multiple carbohydrates (potatoes, rice, bread) - unless you're interested in spreading your waistline.
  •   Citrus juice and grains (they'll ferment)
I hope these suggestions will help you avoid those nasty energy drops after lunch... or any other time of the day.

Colostrum to Strengthen the Immune System and Fight Infections

Colostrum to Strengthen the Immune System and Fight Infections

Colostrum for Improved ImmunityBefore the development of antibiotics, colostrum was the main source of immunoglobulins used to fight infections.  And now that anti-biotic resistant strains of bacteria are developing, interest is returning to natural alternatives to antibiotics, like colostrum.Colostrum, or sometimes called "First Milk" or "Beestings", is the initial milk produced by the mammary glands.  It is produced in the last stages of pregnancy and the first few days following birth, usually thicker and more yellow than the milk that follows.White blood cells (leukocytes) are prominent in colostrum.  These are also important in protecting the body from bacteria, viruses and foreign matter, especially in infants.  Babies that are born prematurely have been shown to do much better with colostrum than formula, as the natural proteins, minerals, nutrients and other components are much easier to digest, and more completely so, than the laboratory synthetic components in formulas.  And, of course, there are dozens and dozens of natural ingredients that cannot be duplicated in the laboratory. It is also notable that the formation of healthy colonies of "good" bacteria in the intestines is aided by consuming colostrum.

Colostrum as a Supplement

Colostrum is a good "traveling" supplement as it doesn't need to be refrigerated. It is high in the protein antibodies (immunoglobulins) specific to many human disease-causing organisms (pathogens) including E.Coli, salmonella and staphylococcus.  In this way, it further assists proper immune function.  Colostrum is very rich in proteins and vitamin A, and contains growth factors, antimicrobial factors and antibodies, providing even more passive immunity.Take 1-2 capsules, twice a day, depending on weight, and 1-2 hours away from food, as well as 2-3 hours away from antibiotics.Click here to go to the Eve's Herbs store for Colostrum.Doc Eve

Herbal Remedies for Dog Joint Pain and Overall Health

Herbal Remedies for Dog Joint Pain and Overall Health

Dog owners have been enthusiastically reporting back to us on the healing and recovery from dog joint pain, hip dysplasia, subdermal tumors and a loss of energy and vitality.  Dog joint pain, and the draining of zest and spirit that will accompany it, is a heartbreaking thing to watch.  But here is one dog's story of recovery...

Testimonial from "Sid" the movie actor dog

Sid, on the "Breathless" movie set, and his recovery from dog joint painIn one case, “Sid”, the movie actor dog, became suddenly arthritic after his 10th birthday. Over the next 4 years, he got progressively worse, having to be carried up stairs, lifted into the car, developing numerous tumors.  Eventually he was not even able to walk a few yards before collapsing. As fate would have it, a frequent user of the Eve’s Herbs formulas just happened to be passing by.  This person handed Sid’s owner a piece of paper with “www.EvesHerbs.com” written on it, and suggested she try some herbs for her ailing dog.  Skeptical but hopeful, she gave the two recommended formulas a try and Sid responded within days.  He began running and playing again and his tumors even shrunk.Eighteen months later, Sid’s owner reported, “Sid just had his 16th birthday and he’s still hiking around the foothills chasing squirrels.  Who knows if there’s a day or a year left in him, but having the last year and a half to appreciate every moment and see him enjoying life… that’s indescribable.”Sid can be seen playing “Earl the dog” in the 2012 version of the movie “Breathless” starring Gina Gershon, Val Kilmer, Kelli Giddish and Ray Liotta. For an article written by Sid’s owner for Mountain Weekly News about his recovery, check out: mtnweekly.com/old-dog-new-hope-32642

We are also now blogging on our website, EvesHerbs.com, as well as Twittering and Facebooking, and any feedback, including comments on the blog articles on our website, would be lovely. For anyone concerned with the body beautiful fitting into last year’s bikini, our Weight Loss Therapy Pack has taken off!! The results, going by the re-orders, have been quite heartening.  It consists of the Detox colon cleansing powder, Fiber Regulator, Patic Fe and TQH.Weight Shedding Extras - On Sale while they last, now $14 instead of $161)  ACP formula - since one of the most important components to dropping some pounds is a good nights sleep, it is very helpful there, with its added benefit of soothing mild aches and pains.2)  Pan D-2  is extra help for those sugar cravings which so often nag at even the most stoic of dieters.3)  Vervain is not only useful for calming audition jitters but also to make “nervous eating” less likely. Some people report that the Joy Formula has made all the difference in their lives in regard to renewing some joie de vie overall, thus less food needed.I just received a re-order from the owner of our favorite gently aging Great Dane saying, “Astro says ‘Hi’ and thank you for making his later years so much more pleasant and functional.” I do so appreciate the feedback and it certainly is our great pleasure.  He takes Devil’s Claw and AR+ for his arthritis, especially in his hips, S Blend to help his adrenal glands keep him happier and also provide him with the cortisol he needs.  He also takes the ACP Formula for pain and restlessness. Our Peeper Keeper Formula is in the news again.  Our patient wrote: “Thanks as always for your advice and the magical herbs.  Guess what?  I recently went for an eye exam and for the first time in my adult life, my steadily deteriorating vision got better!  It has to be the herbs”!!From a long time patient – “I never want to run out of Bactotox or Herba Pneu!  Taking AllerTotal too – gave our cat a drop, a month later he sneezed a few times.  I gave him an additional drop – no sneezing since.  8 months for me without a sinus infection.  Unheard of – doing yard work and bicycling and no problems (I’ve always been allergic to several grasses, etc). “Just fresh from a phone consult:  A woman from Illinois presented with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, digestive problems, "very bad" sugar cravings, fibromyalgia and swelling, especially of the face."I am amazed that I am feeling so much better physically overall, as if I were back on my pain shots, which I had to stop due to the unwelcome side effects.  What was unbelievable though, was that someone brought the best brownies ever and I only had one bite.  Normally, I would eat the pan.  The swelling of my face is totally gone which is great because of the wedding this weekend.  The pictures will be so much nicer."I am grateful to the following people for referring others and  recommending our Therapy Packs, phone consultations or personal visits:  Rhonda Beiley, Claudette Caraballo, Greg Gilchrist, Sharon Gilchrist, Ali Ironside, Jan Lewis, Jodi Lipper, Lisa Lipper, Thomas Mitchell, Sherry Revord and Trutina Maria Sowell.A joyful and healthy summer to you and may your energy be wiltproof,

Dehydration Dangers in the Heat of Summer

Dehydration Dangers in the Heat of Summer

Dehydration in Hot Weather

With the heat seeming to reach higher averages each year, the possibility of dehydration and the resulting symptoms is a growing concern, especially in summer time.

Human body weight approaches 75% water which is crucial to the proper functioning of all body systems.  Dehydration can affect blood pressure causing organs and tissues to not receive the proper amounts of oxygen and nutrients required.

Dehydration occurs when your body is losing more water than it is taking in.  This is easy to do in the summer heat when you're busy and not noticing how long it has been since you last drank something.  Exercise and excessive sweating can surely accelerate the process, as can illness with fever, diarrhea and vomiting.

We're all at risk, but the elderly, young children and those with chronic illnesses are especially susceptible and should be monitored for fluid intake - keep an eye on your pets, too.  Mild to moderate dehydration can usually be dealt with by simply drinking more water, while severe dehydration will require immediate emergency care.

Symptoms of Dehydration

Symptoms of mild to moderate dehydration include:

  • Thirst (duh!) with accompanying dry or sticky mouth.
  • Feeling tired and sleepy - a decrease in the amount of activity in children.
  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded.
  • Dark yellow urine and/or not urinating as usual - over 3 hours for infants, 8 hours in children and teens.
  • Few or no tears when crying.
  • Headaches, often accompanied by constipation.
  • Dry skin.

What To Do To Avoid Dehydration

Start drinking extra water at the first sign of any of the above symptoms of dehydration, but if any of these symptoms become severe, and especially if they are accompanied by rapid heartbeat and/or breathing, delirium or unconsciousness, call for emergency treatment at once.

If you are more the type that likes to think preventively, drinking several glasses of water a day is always a good idea, and you can use the taking of your daily herbs as a reminder to drink a little extra.  Eating foods with a high water content is another way of increasing your daily fluid intake.  Here's a list to start you off:

High Water Content Foods

  • Watermelon:            92%
  • Grapefruit:                90%
  • Coconut Water:       95%
  • Avocado:                   81%
  • Cucumber:                96%
  • Cantaloupe:              89%
  • Strawberries:           92%
  • Broccoli:                    90%

Have a happy and healthy summer!Doc Eve
