ADD and ADHD Are Manageable Without Drugs

ADD and ADHD (Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) have been the go-to diagnoses for some time now in cases where teachers and parents find children to be constantly moving, unusually distracted and not paying attention. More and more adults are also receiving these diagnoses. We usually experience this as feeling mad as a rabbit on skates.The drug most commonly prescribed, Ritalin, is the drug of choice in around 85% of cases in children - that's millions of children.  Adderall is also commonly given and while in a different class of drug, both are, ironically, stimulants. Most of us know that these disorders are not caused by a deficiency of prescription drugs - that can have some pretty nasty side effects.

CAUSES of ADD and ADHD

A 2007 study in the The Lancet, a British medical journal, demonstrated that sodium benzoate, a food preservative found in many  salad dressings, jams, fruit juices, carbonated drinks and other foods, causes ADD and ADHD in susceptible children.¹Generally, however, the sheer amount of sugar and junk food in children's diets is the most common culprit and has added to the numbers of overweight and obese children as well as the frightening increase in diabetes.CASE IN POINT:  A long-time patient of ours has a son who had been experiencing ADD symptoms; the most disturbing of which was confusion. After using the diet in my book, Feeling Very Much Better (FVMB), and taking a personalized version of the Therapy Pack, his confusion and ADD were gone.We got a call from his mom recently, saying that he had a setback when he ate 4 Krispy Kreme donuts in one sitting and within 60 minutes was back to feeling confused again. An Antibiotic Nightmare Story

An Antibiotic to Avoid

Antibiotic or otherwise, I normally don't diss pharmaceuticals, but the Levaquin craziness has popped up in my practice yet again.About 10 years ago, I sent out a newsletter on ruptured Achilles heels because two people in a row came in - quite disabled - after taking it for two weeks. Unbelievably, the antibiotic Levaquin (Levofloxacin) is still being prescribed and Achilles tendons, followed by the joints generally, are still being damaged, plus the neurological and kidney disorders that can come with it.Recently, a patient, who is an avid sportswoman, wrote: "My doctor gave me the antibiotic, Levaquin. The next morning I could not get out of bed because my Achilles heel had totally frozen up. I Googled it and saw it was a very common, often lasting, reaction and stopped it at once."It was the same the next day when she called me and we decided to double up on her herbs - Bactotox, TQH, Rhodiola, Cramp Bark and Joy Blend. She was improved by the next day, but it took a month before the herbs completely counteracted it.Perhaps you could talk your doctor out of that particular antibiotic prescription.  If you're on the fence about taking an antibiotic, you might try the acute dose of the Bactotox coupled with the AHCC or Enhance. You may be pleasantly surprised.

RECIPE:  Pesto Sauce a la Campanelli

For a pasta with pesto sauce for 4 people, try the following:Place directly into your Cuisinart or similar food processor with the chopper blade:

• 4 big handfuls of fresh basil or 2 of basil and 2 of arugula which makes it spicier
• 2 handfuls of walnuts (not in photo)
• 4-6 cloves of garlic depending upon size; just peel and add
• 4 tablespoons of Pecorino Romano already grated (not in photo)
• 1 small jalapeño with seeds
• 4 tablespoons of olive oil; add a little more if too thick or dry
• 10 pieces or so of sun-dried tomato halves (optional)

Set chopper on "pulse" and check a couple of times and stir if needed. Then pulse again for the texture you want. Since chronic diarrhea in the elderly is often worse during the holidays, the following supplement will be timely.  It is such a very common, painful and embarrassing misery, yet few know that it is usually very easily fixed with the right fiber.  Fiber is one of the most important nutrients to the human body, allowing us average citizens regularity in our bathroom activities and helping to prevent a host of diseases.The one we've found to be the best over the course of over 40 years, is the DETOX formula we carry and use.  It softens hard stools, stops diarrhea, and is a bulking agent and detoxifier of the bowel.  The person will feel the relief of generally improved digestion and absorption of their food as well.If there is painful constipation though, instead of diarrhea, a laxative like the Fiber Regulator or Patic Fe would need to be used with it.  In a perfect world, the ideal answer to this is to simply eat more whole plant foods, of course.  But by the time we get to being politely called "elderly", habits die hard, so this gentle (DETOX) powder of flax, psyllium, pectin, mint, etc., will take care of either problem.
